You may wonder why you should fly a plastic model aircraft. So, I would like to explain why it’s a good idea. To make it clear from the start, the plastic model aircraft that I refer to is a very strong plastic material called fluteboard.

This material is very robust and when used correctly, can make a wonderful RC Plane. It comes in various thicknesses, but I would suggest using the 3mm to build your fist plane as it will be the correct balance between strength and weight.

If you are starting out in the sport, this plastic material can save you thousands of dollars. If build correctly, you can build an aircraft that is almost impossible to destroy. Even after a serious crash you can generally make a few minor repairs and be back in the air in a few minutes.

Most models now days are made of balsawood and although very light, they can not withstand a crash. After a serious crash of a balsawood aircraft you normally spend the next few months or even weeks rebuilding.

After losing a few of these myself and getting very frustrated with too little flying and lots of rebuilding, I decided that there must be an easier and cheaper way of getting going in this magnificent sport.

My search led me to Quentin, a expert RC Plane builder, who advised me to go the plastic model aircraft route. Since then I have had hundreds of successful flights and many easy to fix crashes. So like me, if you are tired of crashing your model into a million pieces then maybe its time to move away from wood and plastic?
